History

  • Mazda Motor Corporation has been in business since 1931. Its headquarters are in Japan, but its vehicles are sold worldwide. Types

  • Mazda engines can contain a single carburetor or multiple carburetors. The carburetors may either be two barrel or four barrel, and they will have an up-draft, down-draft or side-draft design. According to the California Environmental Protection Agency, replacement carburetors for Mazda and other vehicles must be listed as described by the Air Resources Board. Function

  • The barrel or throat of the Mazda carburetor allows the air to flow through the engine properly. It contains a valve that controls the right mixture of air and fuel. This mixture is distributed and regulates the engines speed and power. The older Mazda engines contain updraft carburetors, which enables the air to flow below the carburetor and exit out the top. The updraft carburetors were replaced by side-draft model ones. The 1992 Mazda MX-5 vehicle contains dual side draft carburetors. This design was created in an effort to help regulate speed more efficiently.

Significance

  • There is an important reason why the proper ratio of air and fuel is needed in the vehicle's engine. Too much or too little fuel in the mixture can be detrimental. Either case can result in wasting gas, thereby reducing the efficiency of the engine. This results in buying more gas and getting less horsepower. Mazda carburetors are designed with this fact in mind. The design is believed to enhance the performance of Mazda vehicles, and the reason for awards such as the "10 Best" for the 1992 MX-5 Miata.
