How to Refill the Transmission in a BMW 318

The transmission in a BMW 318, like all automotive transmissions, needs to be properly maintained. The first priority for drivers is to ensure that there is adequate fluid. Too little fluid can cause the transmission to "slip" or hesitate before finding the right gear. Too much fluid will lead to "foaming" and a loss of fluid. Correctly filling the transmission of a BMW 318 will mean a better driving experience and a longer-lasting transmission.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean funnel
  • Cloth or paper towel
  • Drive the BMW 318 for at least 20 minutes. The most accurate measurement of transmission fluid level can be achieved only when the fluid is warm.

  • Park on a level surface.

  • Apply the hand brake (emergency brake).

  • Apply the foot brake and move the gear selector through each gear. The engine should be running for this run through the gears.

  • Check the transmission fluid level on the dipstick located under the hood, near the left fender. First wipe the fluid from the indicator, replace the dipstick then pull it out again to read the level. There are two lines indicating "low" and "full" measurements.

  • Add fluid to the transmission via the dipstick opening using a funnel. Apply the fluid slowly with intermittent checks to avoid over-filling.

  • Stop filling the transmission when the indicator shows fluid at or near (but not exceeding) the "full" line.
