How to Lubricate The Locks On Your Car

Have you ever noticed the locks on your car getting a little harder to turn? Fixing this is a very simple thing to do.

Things You'll Need

  • spray silicone with spray straw
  • small screwdriver
  • Get a can of spray silicone lubricant and make sure it comes with the long spray straw. It is important to use silicone lubricant for this because it will stay in the locks better than water based lubricant. WD-40 is a water based lubricant. You will also need a small screwdriver or something to push the cover over in the key slot.

  • Push the cover inside the key hole to the side. Put the spray straw in the key hole just past the cover and spray a blast of silicone lubricant. Use a short blast of maybe a second or two. Remove the spray straw and put the key in the lock. Work the tumblers a few times to get the silicone lubricant spread around inside the lock.

  • Repeat this with all the locks on your car. Do not forget the trunk. The ignition switch can also be done, but use caution not to goop it up and have silicone running inside the car.

  • The same silicone lubricant can also be applied to the hinges of the car doors and the latch mechanisms. You may not realize your doors are a little sluggish until after they have been lubricated. Just open the door and spray the hinges at the front of the door and the spray the latch mechanism at the back. Typically the mechanism is part of the door and the latch post is part of the car. Both can be lubricated but the mechanism is the important part.

  • Silicone spray can do a world of good for any lock. Once you have lubricated one lock and seen the results, odds are good you will put silicone lubricant in every lock you own or have to use.
