How to Replace Scion xB Windshield Wipers

The windshield wipers on your Scion xB, like any other vehicle, should be replaced periodically. How frequently you need to replace them depends mostly on where you live, as the rubber of the wiper blades tends to wear out quickly when they are consistently exposed to elements of the weather. Basically, the more you have to use them, the faster they will wear out. Also, if you live in an area that has colder winter temperatures, you must replace your windshield wipers due to excessive cracking. It is important to your safety, as well as the safety of others on the road, that you replace your windshield wipers when necessary.

Things You'll Need

  • Windshield wiper blade replacements Small flat-head screwdriver Needle nose pliers (optional)
  • Purchase your windshield wiper blade replacement inserts. There are three windshield wipers: the front driver side, the front passenger side, and the rear window. Order and install the right wipers for each one because they are each a different size.

  • Lift the wiper arms into the upright locking position.

  • Remove the wiper blade assembly from the wiper arm. It should slide off, but you can use the screwdriver as a pry by slipping the end of the screwdriver into the underside, where the blade assembly and the arm connect.

  • Remove the rubber insert from the wiper blade assembly. Since it is in a track, slide the rubber insert out. Use the needle nose pliers to help you pull the rubber insert over the guard.

  • Remove the backing plates from the rubber insert. There is one on each side and they should pop off.

  • Attach the backing plates to the new rubber insert in the opposite manner of how you removed them from the old insert. Make sure you are installing the front backing plate on the front and the back one on the back side.

  • Install the new rubber insert into the wiper blade assembly. The long part must face the wiper arm. Make sure that you are sliding the rubber insert into the grooves correctly.

  • Slide the wiper blade assembly back onto the wiper arm. Make sure that any safety clips are engaged by pushing the blade on as far as it will go.

  • Return the wiper arms to their proper position on the windshield.
