How to Change a Tag Light

The tag lights on your car are a very important light to maintain. Tag lights give other drivers on the road and the police department a way to visibly see the tag on your vehicle. The tag light provides enough light to illuminate the metal on your tag, giving other drivers clear sight to your vehicle's tag information. The process is quick and easy. In some states you can actually get pulled over for having a faulty tag light. A tag light is a good thing to inspect when you are doing a routine automotive inspection on your vehicle. Changing a tag light is not difficult at all.

Things You'll Need

  • New tag light
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Locate the tag lights. They usually are sitting above the tag. There will usually be two lenses.

  • Pry the lenses out with a flat head screwdriver. The bulb is usually in a fixed position above the lens. Some lenses will unscrew with a Phillips head screwdriver.

  • Unscrew the bulb with your fingers. The bulb will pop out.

  • Replace the bulb with a new one. Make sure the bulbs are the same type.

  • Screw the bulb into the slot. It will be in place when you cannot turn it anymore.

  • Pop the lens back in its place. It should go right into place.
