How to Replace the Rings on a Honda CRF70

The Honda CRF70 is a small mini bike that provides young and small statured racers real Honda performance in a size appropriate for them. Whether you race your CRF70 or just ride it on trails, the power it packs in its 70cc engine is evident as soon as you twist the throttle. However, that power can begin to wane if the rings go bad. Replacing the rings on the CRF70 is pretty simple and can easily be performed by any novice mechanic.

Things You'll Need

  • Bike stand
  • Screwdriver
  • Spark plug wrench
  • Socket set
  • New rings
  • Set the bike upright on the bike stand to make it easier to work on. Use the screwdriver to remove the lefthand plastic shrouds on the bike. Use the socket set to remove the mounting bolts in the exhaust system underneath of the shrouds.

  • Pull the exhaust system of of the engine after removing the mounting bolts and then use the spark plug wrench to remove the spark plug from the engine. Use the socket set to remove the mounting bolts holding the top-end of the engine in place.

  • Carefully slide the top-end of the engine off of the lower portion to expose the piston. Use the pliers to pull the old rings off of the piston and then slide the new ones into place. Carefully slide the top end of the engine back onto the piston and tighten down the mounting bolts.

  • Screw the spark plug back into the engine and reattach the spark plug wire. Reattach the exhaust system with the mounting hardware and then mount the plastic shrouds back in place. Start the bike up and see how it runs!
