How to Troubleshoot the Exhaust System in a Toyota Corolla

The maintenance for the 2003-2006 Toyota Corolla is every 15K miles for exhaust pipes and mountings. The car should be inspected sooner if problems or suspected problems should arise.

  • Inspect the muffler, hanger, heat shields and clamps on Toyota Corolla for excessive wear, tears, rust, punctures, and corrosion build up with a flash light or shop light. Use caution. Let the engine cool or use protective covering before touching or removing any parts.

  • Tap on the muffler and exhaust pipes of your Toyota Corolla to hear any defects. The build up of any loose rust will fall. A hollow ping will indicate an overly worn part. A strong ping usually indicates the muffler is sturdy. Contact dealership or manufacturer for replacement parts.

  • Look for damage to the catalytic converter. Overheating has occurred if the coloring is blue or brown on the steel. If damage is present the catalytic converter will need to be replaced.

  • Check pipes for damage, dents, holes and corrosion, as this can impede the flow of gases. This may lead to harmful exhaust fumes. If damage is present, the pipes will need to be replaced. Check dealership or manufacturer for replacement parts.

  • Make sure clamps and mounts to are secure. If not, tighten. Loose mounts and clamps can cause unwanted vibration. Check for damage. Replace clamps and mounts if necessary.

  • Keep on schedule with the manufacturer suggested maintenance. By doing so, it will be easier to catch problems while they are minor vs. major. Most technician will visually check for exhaust system problems for no charge during regular car checkups.
