The Dodge Caravan mini-van has undergone a number of changes since the 1990s, most of which have been concentrated in the interior features and the engine and transmission. While earlier models have had some reliability problems with the automatic transmission, the power steering system has remained essentially the same. Maintaining the power steering fluid levels is a simple home procedure for any Dodge Caravan.
Check the power steering fluid levels of your Dodge Caravan every 22,500 miles or sooner if you notice a leak or problems with the steering system when you drive.
Park your Caravan on a level surface and turn off the engine before working under the hood. Hot fluid or an uneven surface can artificially change the fluid levels and result in a misread.
Locate the power-steering fluid reservoir in the engine department labeled "Power Steering Fluid" and remove the cap to check the fluid level. The fluid should be above the low level mark and not exceed the maximum level.
Refill the power steering fluid with Dodge-approved fluid, if necessary. If you have to refill the power steering fluid regularly, check closely for hidden leaks in the power steering system and take your vehicle in to the dealership if you are unable to locate a leak.
Check the hoses and connectors around the power steering reservoir for cracks or breaks in the hoses whenever you check the power steering fluid level and replace hoses and clamps as necessary.
