How to Maintain Power Steering Fluid Levels in a Chevy Impala

The Chevy Impala is one of Chevrolet's most famous and oldest model sedans. Introduced in the late 1950s, the Impala remains a popular full-size car and is still in production. Do-it-yourself maintenance is relatively easy on the Impala because of its widespread use and manufacture, especially fluid maintenance like oil, power steering fluid and other fluid levels that you can check under the hood.

Things You'll Need

  • Chevrolet approved power-steering fluid
  • Turn the car off before checking the power-steering fluid levels. If the engine is warm, allow the engine to cool off before checking the power-steering fluid.

  • Park the car on a level surface before checking power-steering fluid or any fluid located under the hood, as having the car parked on an incline can artificially change the fluid levels and cause a misread.

  • Check the power-steering fluid levels in your Chevy Impala once every 20,000 miles, or sooner if you notice fluid leaking from under the hood or are having problems with your power steering.

  • Find the power-steering pump reservoir, located on the passenger side of the vehicle. The reservoir should be at the back of the engine, behind the alternator. Consult your owner's manual for a more detailed map of the engine.

  • Look for the power-steering pump reservoir in the same location for any Chevy Impala from 1996 to the present, but consult your owner's manual for minor differences in earlier vehicle models.

  • Open the cap of the power-steering pump reservoir to check the fluid level. Keep the fluid level maintained between the low level mark and the maximum fluid level, topping off the fluid with Chevrolet-approved power-steering fluid if necessary.
