How to Mix Different Weights of Motor Oil

Motor oil is an essential ingredient in keeping your engine running smoothly and efficiently. Oil manufacturers make all sorts of oils, varying in weight and viscosity. Depending on your vehicle type, and the climate in which you drive, you may need a special blend of motor oil to suit your application. Mixing different types and weights of oil can help you make the perfect custom oil for your engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Motor oil (two types or weights)
  • Large container
  • Stirring stick
  • Pick out two types of engine oil that you would like to blend. For example, try mixing a 10W-30 and a 5W-20 type of oil. You can also mix synthetic oils with mineral oils if you prefer.

  • Pour both oil types into a large mixing container. Make sure the mixing container has enough room for at least two quarts, unless you are mixing larger quantities.

  • Stir the oil vigorously using a stirring stick. Make sure the two oil types have blended together well before pouring the mixture into your engine.

  • Calculate the new weight of the oil by adding the weights and dividing by two. Then calculate the new viscosity by adding the viscosities and dividing by two. For example, if you mixed a 10W-30 oil with a 5W-20 oil, the new oil mixture would be 7.5W-25.
