How to Add Transmission Fluid to a 1999 Taurus

If the transmission fluid level in your 1999 Ford Taurus gets too low, you may experience problems shifting gears, or the transmission may fail completely. It's important to check your fluid levels once a week and have a mechanic flush the fluid when the need arises. The dipstick indicates whether the car has enough transmission fluid. The dipstick has two lines, and the fluid level should be between these lines.

Things You'll Need

  • Mechanic towels or paper towels
  • A car funnel
  • Park the car on level ground. Allow your engine to run for 10 minutes.

  • Open the hood.

  • Pull the dipstick out of the fluid well, located right beneath the engine. Wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel.

  • Stick the dipstick back into the fluid well. Let it sit in the well for 15 seconds. Pull it back out. Read the results. If the fluid level is between the two lines on the dipstick, no action is required. If more fluid is needed, proceed to Step 5.

  • Place the funnel at the tip of the fluid well. Pour in a portion of transmission fluid. Check the fluid level on the dipstick again. Continue to add transmission fluid until the fluid level registers between the two lines on the dipstick.
