With many years in production, the Mitsubishi Lancer earns its reputation as one of the highest quality family cars on the road. Sporting a reasonable price tag and low repair costs, the Lancer 2006 was a high point for this particular make and model. And to make sure it remains one of the most low-cost import cars you can own, follow five simple steps to successfully change the oil on the Lancer 2006.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench and sockets
  • Open-end wrench
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Drain plug crush seal
  • Recycle container
  • Funnel
  • Oil filter
  • 5 liters of oil (5W20)
  • Clean rag
  • Prepare to drain. The right tools will make this go quickly and smoothly. Pop the hood and locate your engine. Dig out your drain pan and position it beneath the drain plug under your car at the base of the engine. Use your socket and socket wrench to loosen the drain plug. Do not remove the plug completely.

  • Pull the plug: Finish unscrewing it with your fingers so you don’t lose it in the drain pan. Not doing so will make for messy cleanup later. With the drain plug removed, the used oil will empty out of the engine and into the pan. While you wait for the oil to drain, wipe off the drain plug and replace the crush seal. Position the pan under your old oil filter and use the oil filter wrench to remove it. Place the old filter into the pan and allow the remainder of the used oil to drain out of it. Install the new oil filter.

  • Fill it up: With your engine emptied out, screw the drain plug back into position at the base of the engine. Now remove the oil cap, insert the funnel and pour in three of the five new liters of oil.

  • Check your work: This is where your clean rag comes in handy. It’s also where you will answer the question of what to do with liters four and five. First, the rag: Clean off your dipstick and reinsert to get an indication of how much oil is now in your engine. Start your car and let it run for a couple of minutes. Then, shut it off and add liter four. Start your engine once more and let it run for another couple of minutes. Check your dipstick once more. If the oil doesn’t reach the fill line, open liter five and add a little more until you get the right indication from your dipstick. An oil change on the Lancer 2006 usually takes 4.2 liters.

  • Recycle and rest: Now that your oil change on Lancer 2006 is complete, gather up your supplies for storage. Also, don’t forget to store your used oil in safe containers for recycling. Now take it easy, or take it out for a spin. You’ve saved about 40 bucks.
