How to Change Oil in a Porsche Cayenne

Changing your oil is one of those routine maintenance items that most people can do themselves, but not everyone wants to take on the task. On a Porsche Cayenne, the task is a little more involved than on other cars, because there is a skid plate that needs to be removed, and a cartridge-style oil filter which can be tricky to remove as well. If you take your time however, you can do it at home.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket
  • Oil extractor
  • Hex-head key set
  • Drain pan
  • Replacement oil cartridge
  • Funnel
  • 7 quarts of motor oil
  • Pop the hood and locate the oil dipstick in the engine compartment. Pull out the dipstick and place the hose from the oil extractor onto the dipstick tube. Use the extractor to remove all of the oil in the engine. Disconnect the extractor.

  • Raise up the front of the vehicle using the jack and set it on the jack stands. Make sure that the vehicle is solidly on the stands before crawling underneath it. Use the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket to disconnect the skid plate on the bottom of the engine; set it to the side.

  • Unbolt the center bolt on the oil filter cartridge case using a hex-head key and allow any excess oil to drain into the drain pan. Once it's drained completely, reinstall the center bolt using the hex-head key. Remove the cartridge case using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull off the old filter cartridge and gasket and discard them.

  • Slide the replacement oil filter cartridge and gasket onto the engine and reinstall the case using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Reinstall the skid plate using the ratchet as well. Raise the vehicle off of the jack stands using the jack and place it back on the ground.

  • Place the funnel in the oil dipstick tube and pour in the motor oil. Reinstall the dipstick tube and start the SUV to allow the motor oil to circulate. Turn off the engine after 2 to 3 minutes.
