Tools Needed for an Oil Change

For most vehicle models, replacing the engine oil requires minimal tools, which you may find at your local auto parts store. These are common tools, but they may be the most important tools you own, if you plan to service the vehicle yourself. Changing the engine oil is the single most significant maintenance job you can do to help increase the life of your engine.

Tools

  • A floor jack and one or two jack stands to gain access to the engine oil pan under the car; a catch pan to drain the oil into; a box-end wrench or ratchet and socket of the appropriate size to remove the drain plug; an oil filter wrench to remove the filter.

Engine Oil

  • When buying engine oil, follow your car manufacturer recommendation. You will find this information on your car owner's manual or vehicle service manual, which you can buy at your local auto parts store or consult at your city public library.

Make sure to choose oil with a viscosity or weight appropriate for your local climate. For example, if your local weather ranges between 0F and 100F (-18C and 38C) year 'round, an SAE 10W-30 grade oil will be appropriate. For lower temperatures, an SAE 5W-30 grade will be a better choice.

However, if you are driving a car with a high-mileage engine, the oil clearance between the moving engine parts will be larger than those in a low-mileage engine. In such case, a 15W-40 or even a 20W-50 oil weight will be more appropriate for your engine.

Changing the Oil

  • Park your car on a level surface and warm up the engine. This will help the oil float and drain all those loose particles seated at the bottom of the engine. Then jack up the front of the car and chock the rear wheels.

Place the catch pan under the oil drain plug of the engine oil pan. Unscrew the oil drain plug and remove the oil filler cap to help the oil flow out of the engine. Then replace the oil drain plug and move the pan under the oil filter. Remove the oil filter and let the oil drain out. Finally, install the new oil filter.

Lower your car and add the correct amount of oil. Start the engine and check for leaks. After you finish, store the used oil in an appropriate container and take it to your local recycling center.
