Repair of a CTEK Charger

Your CTEK battery charger is sensitive to the charging program modes, and if it is set to the wrong mode over- or undercharging can occur. The charger is made to work with a variety of programs, from motorcycles, cars in normal or cold weather and even reconditioning mode to maximize a battery's life. In some situations, the charger's error lamp may light up when a problem exists. Review how you use the charger and also how to read the error and power lamps, as all three are great places to start.

  • Confirm that the battery's positive pole and charger's positive lead are connected, if the error lamp is lit. The error lamp will display an exclamation point when this type of error occurs.

  • Verify that the charger is connected to a 12-volt battery if the error lamp is still lit.

  • Press the "Mode" button to restart the charger if the error lamp is still lit. Replace the battery, as it may not be able to take a charge if the error lamp remains lit.

  • Check that the correct program mode is being used. Use the Small Battery Program to charge a smaller battery, such as for motorcycles; the Normal Battery Program to charge a battery that is wet, or a MF, Ca/Ca, GEL or AGM type; the Cold Weather Program to charge a battery in low temperatures; and the Recond Program to charge a battery to extend its life.

  • Verify that the battery you are charging is a 12V lead type and not frozen or damaged. Inspect the cables before each use. If they are damaged, contact CTEK for replacement.

  • Review the battery size and applicable charge time to verify that the battery charger is working correctly. It should take two hours for an empty 2 Ah battery to reach an 80 percent charge; eight hours for an 8 Ah battery; four hours for an 20 Ah battery; 12 hours for an 60 Ah battery; and 26 hours for an 110 Ah battery size.
