The transmission of your car is a mechanism that changes the gears of the engine as you drive. The transmission makes your car go, and if it is not in top shape, you can be left sitting still looking at the scenery. Transmissions are hard to remove, but it is possible with the right tools and know-how.
When taking out a transmission, the right tools are essential. Make sure you have a basic socket wrench set that has metric units. When picking out the sockets for the work, you will want to have a T-handled socket wrench for sockets buried deep in the engine block, as well as regular-sized angled socket wrenches. You will also want to have a series of jacks, such as a floor jack to hold up the car, jack stands to balance the car so that it is off the floor completely and a transmission jack to hold up the transmission as you are disconnecting it.
When raising your car, it is very important that you look in your owner's manual to see the correct points to jack your car. Make sure to engage the parking brake before jacking up the car in order to prevent rolling. Also, before jacking up your car, remove the black grounding wire from your battery. Jack up the car using the floor jack against the right supporting areas of the car's frame high enough to place your floor jacks, then place your floor jacks in the correct position under the car, lowering the floor jack until the car rests on all three jacks equally.
To remove your transmission, you will need to take out the linkage cables for the throttle, as well as the shifter. Remove the exhaust from your car. Once this is done, remove the heat shield. Mark the locations in your engine of the drive shaft using a grease pen. Remove the rubber mount from the drive shaft, then mark the location of the rear drive shaft. After you have done this, remove the drive shaft. After this, drain all the transmission fluid from your vehicle. Disconnect all wires and hoses from the transmission and secure the transmission jack underneath to support it. Remove all the bolts holding down the transmission and its fly wheel. Your transmission is now ready to be removed by slowly lowering it to the floor, making sure it clears all other electrical lines.
