How to Adjust the Rear Camber for a 240SX

The rear camber of a Nissan 240SX is the vertical alignment of the rear tires in relation to the body. Camber is important to the safety of the vehicle because misaligned tires lead to dangers such as engine component failure or a cracked axle. Adjusting the rear camber is done at home. Purchase a camber kit for the Nissan 240SX, and adjust the rear camber in just about an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 car jacks
  • 2 jack stands
  • Socket wrench
  • Tape measure
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Raise the rear of the Nissan 240SX with 2 car jacks, one placed on each side of the car. Place a jack stand next to each jack. Lower the car so it rests on the jack stands.

  • Remove the bolts from the wheel assembly with a socket wrench. Remove the wheel assembly.

  • Measure the distance between the bottom on the front of the fender well and the center of the axle hub. Hold the tape measure parallel to the ground when taking the measurement. Remember this measurement.

  • Remove the four bolts on the rear upper control arms with a socket wrench. Set the bolts aside. Remove the upper control arms.

  • Remove the bolt on the lower strut with a socket wrench. Remove the strut from the spindle. This procedure is only done on models of the Nissan 240SX from 1989 to 1994. If you are working on a model more current than 1994, skip this step.

  • Twist the threaded shafts on the rear arm with your hands until no threading shows.

  • Grab the arm and inner bushing with your hand and hold it in place. Turn the adjustment nut on the arm until the arm is the same length as the factory installed rear arm.

  • Extend the arm ends on the front arm so the same amount of thread shows on both sides. Adjust the center nut until the front arm is the same length as the factory installed front arm.

  • Position the front arm next to the factory-installed front arm. Insert the provided bolts into the mounting holes, but do not tighten. When properly aligned, the factory-installed bolts should insert into a second set of mounting holes on the front arm. Repeat with the rear arm.

  • Replace the lower strut if it was removed. Replace the wheel assembly

  • Adjust the tires so they align vertically with the body. When you look at the front of the car, the tires shouldn’t tilt inward or outward.

  • Tighten the bolts with a socket or adjustable wrench to lock the arms into place.
