How to Read the Date of Manufacture Tire Codes

To determine when a tire was produced, you can look at the tire identification number, which is a code that also displays where the tire was manufactured and its size. The format of the tire identification number changed in the year 2000. If the last four symbols of the tire identification number are digits, the tire was produced in or after the year 2000. If only the last three symbols of the tire identification number are digits, the tire was produced before the year 2000.

Tires Manufactured After 2000

  • Write down the last four digits of the tire identification number located on the sidewall.

  • Add the digits "20" before the last two digits. This is the year that the tire was manufactured. For example, if the four digits from Step 1 are "2308," the tire was manufactured in 2008.

  • Use the first two digits from Step 1 to determine the week of the year in which the tire was manufactured. To do this, simply use an online calendar for the year you calculated in Step 2 and count off the number of weeks specified by the two digits. For example, if the four digits are "2308," count off the weeks until you get to the 23rd week of 2008.

Tires Manufactured Before 2000

  • Write down the last three digits of the tire identification number.

  • Add the digits "199" before the last digit. This is the year that the tire was manufactured. For example, if the three digits from Step 1 are "238," the tire was manufactured in 1998.

To do this, use an online calendar for the year you calculated in Step 2 and count off the number of weeks specified by the two digits.
