How to Tune a Mazda RX-7

It is vital for you to keep your Mazda RX-7 well maintained. Typically, a tuneup is required after every 30,000 miles; doing so at this interval will keep your Mazda RX-7 running properly as well as help prevent any problems from occurring in the first place. You might be thinking twice about hiring a mechanic to do this for you, but there's no denying that the job can be a lot faster. If you want to save more money, however, you can choose to do the tuneup yourself. It doesn't have to be complicated. You can just start by changing the oil, checking the spark plugs, the fan belt, and the transmission fluid.

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 42-piece socket and ratchet set
  • Wrench set
  • Hydraulic floor jack
  • Industrial work gloves

Changing the Oil

  • Change your oil and oil filter, make sure that you select one that is recommended by your Mazda RX-7's owner's manual. Typically, five quarts of oil is needed to fill your engine. When it comes to changing your oil filter, you might want to consult a mechanic for the best choice for your car.

  • Loosen the two bolts that hold your air filter in place. Remove the old one, replace it with the new air filter, and then fasten the bolts again.

  • Remove the used fuel filter and replace it with a new one. In cause your Mazda RX-7 is using a fuel injector, you don't need to replace the fuel filter from time to time; you only have to do so if the injectors are obstructed by debris.

Changing the Spark Plugs

  • Make sure that you change your Mazda RX-7's spark plugs after every 60,000 miles. Platinum spark plugs are much more preferable, albeit expensive, than the spark plugs that were originally installed in your car. Should you opt to use the ordinary spark plugs, be sure that you replace them after every 50,000 miles. A gapping tool is what you need in order to remove and replace the spark plug.

  • Check to see if the spark plug wires are whole and undamaged, without any tears and cuts. It is advisable to change the original wires with a higher-quality set after 60,000 miles; this will prevent any future damages. As for the Mazda RX-7, you will find the wires affixed to the car's distributor cap. You will need to replace the distributor cap whenever you change the wires.

  • Purchase a new distributor cap and rotor. The distributor routes electricity through to the spark plugs, while the rotor is one of the parts of the distributor cap, and both eventually break down due to daily wear and tear.

Replacing Gaskets, Belts and PCV Valve

  • Make sure that you adjust the Mazda RX-7's valves according to the proper instructions. Adding a new gasket within the valve cover will make sure that oil will not leak on your car's engine.

  • Replace your Mazda RX-7's belts to keep you from getting stranded while you're on the road. In the Mazda RX-7, it's the serpentine belt that needs to be changed. Make sure to see a mechanic who will be able to replace this; doing so on your own is a very difficult task.

  • Replace your positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. After a while, this becomes clogged and affects the engine's performance as the oil leaks out. Fortunately, replacing this is inexpensive.

Changing the Fluids

  • Take a look at the battery's fluid levels. If they are low, fill the cells with distilled water. Make sure to clean the battery as well with a knife, chipping away at dirt and any corroded areas from the posts and cables.

  • Check the power steering, transmission, and coolant within your RX-7's engine. If you live in a place with cold weather, make sure that you use the proper antifreeze coolant. Don't forget to take a look at your windshield wiper fluid levels too.

  • Use a dipstick to check if you still have enough brake fluids. Apart from checking the amount, you also have to look at the quality of the fluid; you want the brake fluid to be pink. If it's brown, then that means your brake fluid is already dirty.
