How to Dispose of Old Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid circulates through the engine of a vehicle to lubricate the gears. It keeps the gears shifting properly and maintains the temperature of the engine. Approximately every 30,000 miles (this number changes slightly depending on the make and model of the vehicle), you should change the transmission fluid to keep your car in top working order. After changing the fluid, you must properly dispose of the old fluid at a local waste facility.

Things You'll Need

  • Funnel
  • Milk jug (or other sealed container)
  • Find an empty milk jug or other sealed plastic bottle. Make sure that this bottle hasn't been used to hold oils or other car fluids because waste facilities will not accept mixed fluids.

  • Place a funnel into the mouth of the bottle. Pour the transmission fluid into the bottle. Remove the funnel and replace the cap.

  • Take the sealed bottle of transmission fluid to a used fluid collection site. Check your municipal and county government offices to find sanctioned sites. Another option is to take used fluids to a local auto center.
