April 2013 Randy’s Electrical Corner - Jp Magazine

This one time at band camp…sorry guys, I just had that movie on my mind. Wasn’t life easier before everyone had a smartphone in their pocket? Well, OK, maybe the smartphones make life more easierest, but with many of our old vehicles, it makes things more harderer. It’s as I always say, sometimes you gotta eat some caramel chocolates to get to the good stuff.

They will charge with less amperage, but they will actually discharge the battery if you use them while on a charger that delivers less than 1-amp. With this outlet, Trasborg had no problem charging his and the missus’ phone at the same time without any adapters or losing two power ports to pull it off.

Way back when a lot of these things were built, you had to check a different box in the order form to get even one power outlet in the dashboard. Of course, back then it was called a cigarette lighter and came with this neat little device for starting fires. Oh, by the way, just because it looks like a tasty red candy doesn’t mean it is. Don’t do what I did, don’t try to eat it. Your tongue will thank you.

Oh, I’m sorry I’m getting off the subject. I was talking about phones. It seems like everyone has one today. Phones, tablets, electronic readers, iPods, there are just so many gizmos that people often have on them, near them, or own. It can be difficult to charge all the stuff that people own, especially in a Jeep with only one cigarette lighter.

Luckily I found the answer at Sierra Expeditions: a dual USB outlet from Blue Sea Systems (PN 1016). Now both you and the wife can charge your phones. And the installation is wicked easy. Check it out.

But some newer phones and devices require 1 amp or more to even start charging. This outlet can work in both 12- and 24-volt Jeep systems and will put out 2.1 amps at 5 volts which means you could even charge two iPads off of it. If you’ve got a topless Jeep, this is going to really interest you. As you might expect from something with “sea” in the title, this thing was intended for boats. That means the manufacturer figured it will see water at some point. The included rubber cap has little bumps that will plug into the USB and keep out dirt and water when it isn’t in use. So don’t worry about parking your topless Jeep and rain falling. Installation is like a slam dunk in football. Just hook up one positive wire and one ground wire and you are good to go. In this case, I hooked a constant positive wire up to it. Sure, it has power all the time, but I wasn’t worried about it. That little green LED won’t draw much power at all. In fact, right after I hooked this up in Trasborg’s Cherokee, he let the thing sit for two weeks. There wasn’t even the slightest hesitation in starting. But for you topless guys, I’d suggest hooking it to switched power just in case you get a rainstorm and you didn’t put the cap on it.
