How to Store 55 Gallon Drums of E85

E85 is an alternative fuel which is composed of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. While E85 is gaining popularity as a cleaner and greener fuel for automobiles, this product is potentially dangerous when handled or stored improperly. Unlike gasoline, E85 conducts electricity. At low temperatures E85 is also more flammable than gasoline. Fumes from this product are also potentially toxic when inhaled. E85 is colorless. Fumes may give off a perfume like odor

Things You'll Need

  • UL approved containers

Storing E85

  • Select only approved containers for storing E85. Because of the product's ability to conduct electricity, aluminum and other soft metal containers are not appropriate for storing E85. Some plastics are also not compatible with this product, including polyethylene. The only safe vessels for storing E85 are made from stainless steel, cold-finished steel or reinforced fiberglass. All products used to store E85 should be approved for this substance. Products that have been approved by Underwriter Laboratories (UL) are recommended by the US Department of Energy.

  • Follow all local, state and federal laws regarding storage of E85. This may include the National Fire Prevention Association Codes relating to flammable and combustible substances, state and local regulations, Federal Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures Codes and Hazardous Waste Storage and Disposal Regulations. If you are unfamiliar with regulations regarding storage of E85, contact your local fire department, safety official or environmental services office to obtain specific information about regulations in your area.

  • Inspect containers regularly. E85 can cause corrosion of storage containers. Visually inspect the inside of storage vessels for evidence of breakdown. Inspect the outside of containers for condensation. Inspect all seal and caps to ensure that they are air and water tight. If there is a problem with the container you are currently using, transfer the material to a new, UL approved storage vessel.
