Converting a generator from gasoline to natural gas is a fairly simple job because you can install a conversion kit that does the work for you. Gas conversion kits are available in hardware stores, and you have a wide selection to choose from. Two- and three-way converters that allow you to choose what form of fuel you want to use are also available. Check the specifications on different models to see which converter is best suited for your generator usage.
Take off the air cleaner cover from the generator. This plastic casing next to the fan is held in place with two screws that can be removed with a screwdriver.
Remove the air cleaner assembly with a socket wrench. The assembly is the large plastic housing that you removed the cover from.
Remove the gasket from the carburetor valve behind the air cleaner. The gasket is the flat metal piece that rests against the opening of the valve.
Punch larger holes in the gasket's existing holes with a hole puncher.
Find the stud extenders included with your conversion kit, and insert them into the holes on either side of the valve.
Place the modified gasket on the valve over the stud extenders. The new holes you punched will fit around the larger studs.
Attach the 90-degree hose barb into the round metal adapter. Both of these pieces come with the kit. The hose barb is a copper connector shaped like an "L." Insert one end into the bottom of the round silver adapter, which is shaped like the carburetor gasket.
Slip the adapter onto the stud extenders, over the gasket, with the hose barb facing down.
Connect the hose that carries the vapor gas to the hose barb. It is a thick black hose and should be labeled on the generator. Use the hose's clamp to secure it to the barb.
Slide the gasket included with the kit on top of the adapter.
Replace the air cleaner housing. Secure it in place with the socket wrench, and screw the cover in place.
Install the kit's reducer on the fuel controller. The controller is the silver box that regulates fuel flow. It is attached to the generator. Attach the reducer to the port designed for fuel output, on the top right corner of the controller.
Fix the high-pressure hose to the port just below the outlet. This is the inlet port.
Secure the fuel controller in place by screwing it to the frame of the generator with a screwdriver.
Prime the carburetor. While starting the generator, press the manual primer button on the back of the fuel controller.
