How to Remove a Fuel Filler Cap

The fuel filler cap, more commonly referred to as a gas cap, covers the fuel filler neck on a vehicle. This is the tube that connects to the car's gas tank. When adding gasoline to the vehicle, you'll do so through the fuel filler neck. Removing the fuel filler cap or gas cap on a car or truck is straightforward and simple.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel filler cap key (optional)
  • Put the car's transmission in "Park" (automatic) and turn off the engine, or turn off the car, put the car in gear (manual) and engage the parking brake.

  • Find the fuel filler door release button or lever, if necessary. Some cars have a locking fuel filler door. If the car has a locking fuel filler door, the release button should be near the hood release or next to the driver's seat on the floorboard.

  • Step to the fuel filler door. Pull it all the way open. The fuel filler door may be on the right or left side of the car.

  • Use your key to unlock the fuel filler cap, if necessary. Most fuel filler caps are not the locking type.

  • Turn the fuel filler cap's handle counterclockwise to remove it from the fuel filler neck.
