How to Suck Gas out of the Tank

You may need to get gas out of your vehicle's fueltank for various reasons. If you run out of gas or fill your tank with the wrong kind of fuel, you can suck gas out of the tank without spending the money for a pump or hiring someone to do it. Using a siphon tube, you can use the surface pressure of liquid to transfer gas from a tank to another container.

Things You'll Need

  • 6-foot siphon hose
  • Gas can
  • Insert a 6-foot siphon tube deep into your vehicle's fuel tank. Depending on the level of gas, you may need to push the tube a few feet into the tank.

  • Make a loop in the hose below the level of the tank opening. Do not kink or crimp the hose, or you will not be able to suck out the gas. The loop makes it easier to see when you start to suck gas from the tank.

  • Lift the free end of the tube high above the fuel tank level. The higher you lift it, the easier it will be to suck out the gas. Stand on a chair to get the tube higher.

  • Suck on the end of the siphon tube until you see gasoline in the loop. Stop sucking at this point to prevent gas from approaching your mouth.

  • Lower the end of the hose, and place it into a gas can or other container to push the gas out of the tank.
