If you had to name one group as the king of Honda aftermarket engineering and performance, it would probably be Mugen. And if you were asked to name one thing that influenced the knock-off industry more than any other item, it would probably be the CRX Pro II kit. This trend setting kit featured 6 body pieces made specifically for the 88-89, and 90-91 models, and managed to revolutionize the Honda aftermarket aero industry. Expertly laid high quality fiberglass offered an OEM-quality fit. The side skirt and door caps utilized stock mounting holes, and featured indentions on the exterior of both sides for the authentic Mugen badge. The rear bumper was fitted with its own bumper support that bolted to the chassis just like the factory piece. Also notable was the under-tray that ran along the length of the rear bumper and over the exhaust ends. An inset portion at the bottom of the bumper could be fitted with the included honeycomb-style mesh screen that mounted from the outside of the bumper.
Differences between chassis generations appeared in the front bumper. The 88-89 front bumper is easily recognized by its flat turn signals and small lower duct openings, while the 90-91 front-end utilized larger ducts, and accepted much longer turn signals that wrapped around the front and side of the bumper. To compliment the kit and add some length to the short CRX frame, Mugen introduced an 88-91 lightweight urethane wing that most referred to as the "sponge wing," due to its extremely soft structure.
As with many popular Japanese products, knock-off versions ran rampant. The Mugen Pro II body kit was copied time and time again, with low quality versions being the most popular because of their bargain pricing. Due to the rarity and difficulty in sourcing an authentic Mugen Pro II kit, many had no choice but to resort to ill-fitting copies.
How do you know the Mugen Pro II kit you're about to purchase is authentic? What to look for:
* Mugen stamp on the inside of the body piece, embedded in the fiberglass
* Indentions carved into the side skirts for Mugen badge (careful, some knock-offs included this detail)
* Deep lower portion of the rear bumper that goes all the way across and above the exhaust
* Mesh grill on rear bumper is mounted from the outside, not from the inside
* Bumpers and skirts use factory holes to mount to the body
* Both versions are fiberglass, and are white prior to painting
