1995 Nissan 240SX - Project S14 - Import Tuner Magazine

It’s been a while since I’ve done anything to my ’95 Nissan 240SX. Initially, I attacked the suspension with coilovers from Ohlins and brakes from Brembo. But not having any idea if I wanted an SR, RB, VQ, or even LS swap, this car has been put on the back burner for some months now. And before I lose all my motivation I figured an easy way for me to fall back in love with the car would be to pretty it up. I’ve got a ton of old-school parts lying around the house and I figured I’d throw all the cosmetic and aero bits on while it waits for the heart transplant. For me, if I don’t like the way a car looks, I could easily lose the motivation and focus on the entire project.

SSR Formula Mesh

My favorite wheel to ever come out of Japan. Not including the Reverse Mesh or Full Reverse Mesh, SSR made the Formula Mesh rims with three different stepped lips, depending on size and time of production. This stepped lip with the hollow end rolled back inward is only available on the 17-inch version. After a long time searching for the right lip and size, VR Wheels stumbled across a set in 17x9-inch +13mm offset and 17x10-inch +14mm offset. Shortly after picking them up, I had the lips repolished, the faces repainted, and the bolts dipped in gold.

Nitto NT555

Being able to run the SSR rims with such a low offset meant I had to either pull my fenders or run a tire size a bit narrower than recommended. I chose the latter. Andrew at VR Wheels Cheetah’d the Nitto NT555 205/45-17 tires on the 17x9s and 225/40-17 tires on the 17x10s.

Greddy Gracer Front Lip

Probably the only good looking lip for the Zenki (’95-96) 240SX front end is Greddy’s Gracer front lip. Made of flexible plastic, this lip won’t crack as easily as an FRP version. I had to buy one of the remaining discontinued stock units from the helpful guys at FRsport.com.

EC Works Type-94C Mirrors

If you’re obsessed with Japanese race cars from the ’90s like me, you might have noticed a few of your favorite race cars rocking mirrors like these. Before any Bomex, Ganador, or GT-style mirrors were made, these babies were the only way to ditch big, heavy OEM side mirrors.

Kouki (’97-98) Style LED Taillights

The ’95-96 taillights are just hideous and the dealership wants too much for a set of ’97-98 taillights. Instead, these LED versions of the Kouki lights are much cheaper and nicer at night. Not many cars can pull off aftermarket taillights, but the 240SX is one of them. And best of all, these are the same exact ones that you see all the Japanese tuners selling for twice as much.

Dear Motor Sports Rear Spoiler

One of the worst body lines on the S14 240SX is its feminine rear end. I simply can’t stand the way the trunk cuts off and leans forward towards the car. To fix the problem, I had a Dear Motor Sports (DMS) wing shipped from Japan. This sits just on the rear of the trunk, extending the silhouette just enough for me.

Bee Racing Exhaust, Steering Wheel, and Tilt Lever

I’ve always liked this brand for some odd reason. Maybe it’s because their logo looks like the old GT-R logo or something. Nowadays they’ve moved on to newer Nissan tuning and their old parts are getting harder to find. Luckily for me, an old steering wheel and 3-inch S14 exhaust fell into my lap. After some Mothers polish and a coat of high-temp paint the exhaust was ready to rumble. The red steering wheel tilter is a great way to allow me to move in and out of the car once I get my bucket seats in. Quick-release steering wheels are so 2008.

Splash Race Steering Hub

I’ve been curious about Splash’s Race Steering Hub for some time now. The sales pitch on it is that it’s made with light weight in mind for racers. No plastic accordion looking cover for this car! After installing it, I must admit this is the nicest steering hub I’ve ever had. It comes complete with all the wiring to plug the horn and SRS light into the OEM harness.
