7.3 Liter Diesel Injector Firing Order

The 7.3-liter IDI engine manufactured by International Harvester from 1982 through 1986 and then by Navistar International from 1987 through 1994 is a very different engine than the 7.3-liter DI Powerstroke diesel made by Navistar International and introduced into the Ford line-up of Econoline vans and Ford Heavy Duty pickups halfway into the 1994 model year. The 7.3-liter IDI engine uses a Stanadyne rotary injection pump and indirect injection, whereas the 7.3-liter DI Powerstroke engine uses a hydraulically actuated electronic unit injector system and direct injection.

Cylinders and Firing Order

  • Despite the difference between the two engines, the cylinder banks and firing order is the same. The passenger-side cylinder bank, from front to back, is numbered 1,3,5,7. The driver-side cylinder bank, from front to back, is numbered 2,4,6,8. The firing order is 1-2-7-3-4-5-6-8.
