True Flow XDI Air Intake System for Dodge Ram Cummins Diesel - Free Flowing

When starting out on the path to customization, the first thing anyone wants to do to their truck is replace the factory air filter and intake tube with something that works better and looks cooler.   |   After looking at everything that was available on the market for Dodge diesel pickups, Dependable Off-Road's customer chose the True Flow XDI Air Intake system for his truck. The owner of this Dodge diesel pickup came into the shop at Dependable Off-Road in Anaheim, California, looking for an increase in performance for his weekend towing duties. He also wanted it exactly as we described, "something that looks good." Dependable Off-Road owner Steve Elliott went over all the possibilities and in the end, the True Flow system won out. True Flow has the XDI air intake system, and here's how it describes it, "We remove the restrictive mufflers and resonators on the stock tubing and replace them with smooth mandrel-bent tubing. We replace the air box with our high-flow canister. Finally, after extensive research on True Flow's flow bench, we changed the direction of the air filter so that the air flows from the inside out. We call it inverted air flow technology. This revolutionary change increases the air flow by more than 50 percent and increases power by up to 27 hp and 62 lb-ft of torque." The horsepower and torque figures are not for this particular vehicle. True Flow also further describes its air filters on its Web site, "Fully reticulated (open pore) foam is a honeycomb of tiny, interlocking cells of uniform size that create an impossible journey for dirt particles since there are no clear passageways. Each passageway (16 to 25 mm long) is like hundreds of very small centrifugal/oil bath filters connected to each other. In this way, foam traps and holds the particles throughout the entire volume of foam. This is why they are referred to as full depth filters in contrast to the paper or gauze elements, which are screens or surface air filters. " That's a lot of techie jargon to digest. Let's just say that it works as intended and it looks great. The silver powdercoated canister and red silicone couplers give any vehicle a show quality look. The mammoth five-inch inlet roars to life when you're on the throttle, but is subtle in everyday driving conditions. Enough said. Steve Elliott set me up with Timm Saxton out in the work bays and we teamed up to chronicle the install of the True Flow system.
