Q: I am the proud owner of a 2012 Ford Super Duty Crew Cab F-250 Lariat with the diesel option, and I love the truck. The only nagging issue -- one three different dealers haven't been able to resolve -- is saving the trailer brake controller's gain setting for individually created trailers. We have tried everything, even trying to save in all three of the different areas where the gain is displayed on the productivity screen, to no avail. When adjusting the gain with a trailer connected, there is an OK button displayed in the productivity screen, but that never stays up long enough to hit the Select button on the steering wheel. In other areas (such as the info section), the TBC gain is also displayed and can be adjusted, and the OK remains visible and waits for the select button on the steering wheel to be pressed. I even tried Ford Customer Support, which only referred me to the same dealership's "experts" in my area. This is my last-ditch effort to find out how to save the individual TBC gains for each name/created trailer. Everything else for the trailers (create, select, name, delete, accumulated/reset mileage, etc.) works fine and the TBC works fine. No matter what the dealers or I have tried, it always results in the last gain adjustment being the gain setting for whatever trailer is selected/connected. My best guess is that I may need a software update, unless this is a simple sequence of steps that is not in the owner's manual.
A: I exchanged a few emails with Ford Communications. This is trickle-down information, but it sounds about right. According to Ford, each trailer brake controller gain setting is actually saved in the TBC module for each named trailer entered. However, the current software does not display the gain setting (and make it usable) on the instrument cluster when a specific prerecorded trailer is selected. The engineers are evaluating the issue, and presumably working on a TBC module software update. But whether this update will be available to current owners or will only be applied to new production is still unknown. I suggest periodically requesting the system be checked for updates when you have your truck in for service at Ford. But don't get your hopes up.
