Auto Insurance Claims: Borrowing the car, insurance company, becky

My grandson who is 18 wants to borrow one of our vehicles to drive to work until he can get one of his own. We live in NC and he lives in VA. Would the vehicle be insured if, God forbid, he has an accident?

Hi Becky,

In order for your grandson to be covered, you would have to inform your insurance company that your grandson would be driving the car in another state. The policy would then be rated with him as the driver based on his driving record, age and the state he lives in.
