Auto Insurance Claims: Parked truck hit by student., own insurance, police report

Question
My son's truck was parked in the lot at school and another student hit it. My son did not witness the accident but other students did and informed him of the accident. What should we do?

Answer
Hi Rick,

Your son should go to the school office or campus police to report the incident. He should bring with him the student witness who will be required to give a written or recorded statement. If there is no campus police then he should call the regular police to file a report and will still need his witness. He should ask the police to go to the at-fault person and inspect his car for damage and obtain his insurance information and include it in the police report. Once he has a police report with the information he can contact the other persons insurance company to file a claim. Or he can file the claim with his own insurance company and they will pursue reimbursement from the at-fault persons insurance company. The witness will be required to give a recorded statement to both insurance companies.

I hope this helps
