Auto Insurance Claims: Liability of insurance company on a newly purchased car involved in an accident, side doors, auto dealership

Question
Yesterday I purchased a used car from an auto dealership and called my insurance company to have the car insured. After my agent told me that I was covered I started driving home and was broadsided in the passenger side doors.  When I called the insurance company to report it my agent told me that he had not yet placed my insurance in on the new car. My husband thinks they will try and get out of paying for the damage because of this.  Is the insurance company liable to cover the claim because he had told me that we were covered or are we going to be responsible for it?

Answer
Hi Jamie,
I'm sorry to learn of your predicament.  Your husband may be 100% correct in his feelings that the insurance company is searching for a way to deny your claim.
I hope someone from the dealership overheard all or part of your conversation with the agent so they can be a witness for you.
There will be a record of the phone call, either on your cell phone or the dealership phone, depending on which one that you used.
If your company tries to deny your claim, please contact the department of insurance in your home state for assistance.

Good Luck,
Bennie
