Auto Insurance Claims: Does the name on the cars title have to match the name on the policy?, risk driver, insurance rates

Question
Hi,
My boyfriend and I are planning to buy a car jointly. We are splitting the cost, but plan to put the car in my name (we have licenses from different states, and it is easier to register the car in my state). But my insurance rates are quite high because of an accident I had about four years ago. Is it possible to have him be the primary policy holder if I am the official owner of the car?

Answer
Hi Amanda,

Generally no. Since you are not married, the vehicle must be insured in the same name as the titled owner. Even if you were able to do this it would not matter because you would have to be listed on the policy as a driver or there would be no coverage if you drove the car. The insurance company will determine the premiums based on the highest risk driver on the policy.

I hope this helps
