Auto Insurance Claims: Stolen Car Left in a Lake, crime victims fund, tow company

Question
My car was stolen and after stripping the thief dumped the car in a lake.  The state police had it towed out with a CRANE and now the garage is trying to tell me that I have to pay the $2700 bill to have it towed.  Am i responsible?

Answer
Hi Annette,

Unfortunately, you are responsible for the tow bill. However, if you have comprehensive coverage on the car, your insurance comapny will pay the bill. Another possible alternative would be to contact your state attorney's office to see if your state has a crime victims fund that may pay it. If not and you are not iuntending to repair the vehicle you may be able to sign the title over to the tow company as payment for the bill.

I hope this helps
