QuestionOur dog escaped our fence (he chewed through it) and was hit by a car on US Highway 40 (National Road), and killed. The person responsible left us a message and we contacted them. We asked if there was any damage to their car, and they said no. Now their insurance company is trying to get us to pay for damages (without specifying what damages or how much). Our insurance company is trying to help us. We are insured as a farm--are there special laws that apply? Also, who compensates us for the loss of our dog?

I'm sorry that I wasn't sufficiently clear with my answer. Many times there can be damage to the undercarriage that is not visible to the untrained eye, such as a bent tie rod for the steering or the impact caused the wheels to become out of alignment.
You need to demand an itemized sratement of the damage before considering making any payment.

Although you made every effort to keep your dog fenced, he did escape and was on a highway where no animals are allowed. I see no way that you will be compensated for your loss.
You may be liable for the damages to the car once the exact damage and cost is made available to you.
Since you have made a full report to your insurance company, they have more details than I do. I suggest that you follow their advice on settling this matter.
