Auto Insurance Claims: Insurance Coverage, own insurance, licensed drivers

Question
If you are the driver of a car that doesn't belong to you and you don't have any insurance are you allowed to be driving that car? Will the insurance company pay a claim when the driver is not listed on the insurance policy?

I was involved in a rear end accident and the driver of the other car is not on the car owner's (owned by girlfriend's mother) policy nor does he have any insurance.

Answer
Hi Angela,

Auto insurance follows the vehicle and not the driver. So you do not have to have your own insurance to drive someone elses car. Anyone with an insured vehicle can lend their car to any licensed driver as long as they do not live in the same household. All licensed drivers in a household must be listed on the policy or in some cases can be specifically excluded from coverage.

I hope this helps
