Auto Insurance Claims: auto claim, cracked windshield, notice of cancellation

Question
I know you said CA only but I think this question applies to the entire US plus you are the only expert currently listed in this area. I have a cracked windshield.  Our state does not have a zero deductible as many states.  I recently lowered my auto deductible.  Can I now file a claim for the repair.  It is pre-existing but has never been filed.
I don't know how this website works.  I just found it on google.  Will you please email me directly so I can know the answer?  pfister5@citcom.net
Thanks,
Bill

Answer
Hi Bill-

Let's reason this out together.  If you were able to lower the deductible after damage has happened, then what would stop everyone from calling their company immediately after an accident and lowering the deductible and then calling in the accident then next day?

If you just lowered your deductible and then turn in the claim, the insurance company is going to ask you when  the damage happened and it's important that you are honest with them.  Then the deductibe that you had at the time of the damage will apply.  If you try to convince them that it's just a coincidence that your windshield got cracked just after you lowered your deductible they are going to be immediately suspicious and begin to investigate before paying the claim.  Many times, when you lower deductibles the agent will want to see the car to avoid this type of fraud.

I would not recommend you try it.  The company may or may not pay the claim and then you may get a notice of cancellation or non-renewal.

I hope that helps.
