Auto Insurance Claims: Auto coverage overlap with claim, auto insurance policies, coordination of benefits

Question
I have been covered by an insurance company for the past two years. I recently decided to move over to a new insurance company that my homeowners is currently under, because a ticket I had on my record had dropped. However, two days after my policy started with the new insurance company, I was involved in an accident which I was proved at fault. When filling out the information, I listed my old insurance company as that is the only info I had (it was literally two weekend days after my new coverage started) and because that is who I want the claim under, because if my new insurance company knew about it, I would be dropped. My question is, do I have any risk of my old insurance, who I filed the claim under, finding out about my dual coverage, and trying to make my new insurance pay for it? If so, who should be the one to pay, as I was covered by both at the same time?

Answer
Hi Carter,

Usually if the 1st insurance company finds out about other coverage they would contact that insurance company to pay half of the claim. Most auto insurance policies contain a coordination of benefits clause. You should read your policy to see if it contains this clause.

I hope this helps
