Auto Insurance Claims: information required for other insurance carrier, juris doctor, fender bender

Question
Hello, My son was involved in a fender bender -- the officer issued no citations at the scene and no one was injured (hard to determine fault); our insurance agency has since told us we do not have to talk to the 'other' insurance carrier when they call us unless we want to and thus have referred information about the accident to our own insurance carrier agent. Is this correct or must we talk to other carrier as they say they want a statement from my son? thankyou

Answer
Dear Bill,

Your company is correct: there is no obligation whatsoever to talk with the opposing carrier.

Sometimes people who are looking to the other carrier for a claim will speak with them inasmuch as they feel that the adjuster is writing the check, after all.

But especially where the other carrier might be making a claim against your son, I would forgo any request to give a statement.

Hope this helps,
