Auto Insurance Claims: Trailer coverage, gold bricks, personal watercraft

Question
I have home owners, an umbrella policy, and auto insurance. 2 days ago our trailer lost control and was destroyed along with our personal watercraft while towing with my vehicle. I called AllState and they said I did not list the trailer on my policy. (this is not true I told them I had 3 trailers I used) They say they are not going to cover anything over $500. I was told at the time I called in after I had signed up with them when I inquired about insuring the trailers that they are covered under my auto policy.  My question is do you think the trailer and/or personal watercraft is covered?

Thank you for your help,

Kirk

Answer
The answer to your question varies from state to state, policy to policy and company to company.  Generally speaking, anything that is added to a policy is only done so after the policy holder signs a form agreeing to pay the extra premium due for such an addition or at minimum, any changes made to a policy are always sent to the policy holder by mail. They are called endorsements.
I cannot think of any reason why you would be able to pay a premium on an automobile only and get free coverage on anything that the vehicle is towing.  That just wouldn't make sense.

Now I have seen some policies that may automatically cover a listed trailer on the policy, but not the contents of the trailer.  After all, if they automatically covered the contents of every car and trailer, they'd be liable to cover a load of gold bricks and you can imagine the fraud that could create...

Read the policy.  What the policy states is covered is covered and if it's not on there, then it's not covered.

Good luck!
