Question -
i have a 95 firebird formula 5.7L engine automatic trans.
A yr & a half ago i had 134a put into it & now it has stoped working...my dad filled it up about 2 weeks ago but it only took about 1/2 of a can & now it is blowing hot & i use the gauge to test it & it is in the red.
what could the problem be? i think it may be the compressor..how can i tell if the compressor is no good?
Answer -
Did you use a vacuum pump to evacuate all the atmospheric air out of the system BEFORE you installed the freon ?.

Did you convert this from an R-12 system to an R-134 system ?.

r-134 was set up when i bought the car 4 yrs ago...
an a/c mechanic filled it up 1.5 yrs ago..
how can i tell if the compressor is bad?

Answer
When a compressor fails it locks up and will NOT turn. You need to put a set of A/C guages on the system to see what the high and low pressures are within the system before you can make a diagnosis.

Are you SURE your not putting your single gage on the HIGH side port instead of the LOW side port ?. This would cause the gage to go into the red.

Also the compressor MUST be running in order to get an accurate reading of the high or low side pressures.

Do you have a 2 wire electrical connector attached to the accumulator (receiver/dryer) ?. If so, Pull the plug off and with the engine running and the A/C set to the A/C position, Jumper the 2 wires within the connector and see if your compressor now begins to operate. Do NOT run it longer than 1 minute or you can damage the system.

There is a possibility that you have a restriction within the orifice tube but this would be rare.

let me know.
