Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Oil problems, crankcase, spark plug

Question
Hi, I recently changed the blades on my mower which  has a 3.5hp B&S engine about 4 years old on a rover mower. This involved me turning over the mower on its side which led to oil infesting the engine and the air filter. There is plenty of smoke when on (now I can't start it, after I turned it off). What should I do about this? I've taken the air filter out, but it still won't start.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Aidan,

Clean or replace the air filter. Remove the spark plug and pull the engine over quickly, several times.  Clean or repalce the spark plug.  Check the oil crankcase level and re-fill if needed.  You should be able to start the engine then.  When it does it WILL smoke until all the oil that is where is doesn't belong, burns off.  Most of the oil is probably in the muffler.   Your mower should be fine and run well after that.

Good Luck,
Michael
