Auto body repair & detailing: 96 Chevy K1500 3rd door add or cab swap, cabs, state laws

Question
Hi,

I have a 96 Chevy K1500 extended cab and would like to add the 3rd door or swap with a compatible cab which already has a 3rd door.  Can the 3rd door even be added to a regular 2 door only ext cab without major structural work, or would it be better to just do a cab swap?  How difficult is a cab swap?  I could always just trade pickups, but I've put a little money into the one I have and would like to keep it.

Thanks.

Answer
Swapping cabs would be easiest, you can't reasonably add a 3rd door to a truck that doesn't have them. They're structurally different. You will run into problems with a used cab- the VIN tag will be different on your truck's old cab. Check local and state laws reguarding replacing cabs. Bill
