Auto body repair & detailing: vw body rust, rust buckets, automatic clutch

Question
Thanks for your info. I have an old 72' super beetle that is "chopped" to look like a baja bug. It probobly is not worth much except it's kinda cool looking and still runs very well. The problem is terminal rust to the roof area. The rolled edgees are rusted through is some spots and there is deep penetration around the sunroof. Will I have to cut out the roof and get someone to weld a piece of sheet metal there, or what do you think would be the best way to at least cover it up and STOP the rust.
Thanks. Jim

Answer
You need to graft in a roof- a big job, at best. The only way to get rid of and stop rust is to cut it out completely. Bugs were notorious rust buckets. I had one once- 68 beetle with an automatic clutch. Cool set up, but you couldn't push start it if the battery went dead. Bill
