Auto body repair & detailing: 85 Camaro door handle replacement, iroc z28 camaro, door handle

Hi,
I am new at this auto repair stuff so forgive me if I use the incorrect terms.
I am trying to replace an outside door handle (drivers side) on a 1985 Iroc/Z28 Camaro.
I can't seem to get the rod back in the mechanism in the door and to the plastic hole in the handle at the same time. I either get one end in and can't get the other end in.
Also, after trying a few times, the little plastic lock to hold the rod in the handle broke off.
I am not sure the rod has the correct bend(s) in it and what can I do to keep rod in handle now that the plastic lock is broken?
Any help would be much appreciated.

There is no easy fix for this. First you must get a new plastic clip and then you must bend the rods back in place. look at the other side for help but do not take apart. I have made up many new swear words working on just such things. It takes a little luck and a lot of patience!!!
