Auto body repair & detailing: Is truck totaled, dodge ram 1500, insurance company

Question
I was informed by the shop that was going to fix my 99 dodge ram 1500 that it is totaled and that they will not be able to fix it. What he showed me was the firewall seperated on the passenger sided and he had me feel where the floor board on the passenger side was raised up. He also showed me where the space between the cab and bed are it looks like a "V" now whith about a 1/2 to 3/4 inch difference from both sides. He told me that these are all signs of a bent frame. I thought frames could be straighted.
Could you tell me if ehat he showed me are all signs that the truck is totaled? I don't need it back in perfect condition. If it is totaled what happens to the truck once the insurance comany pays me. It is paid off so the money would go to me. Would I get a chance to buy it back?
Thanks

Answer
a total depends of the cost to fix the vehicle vs the cost the vehicle is worth before the crash. yes frames can be straighted as long as the damage is not to bad to the frame. You could offer to buy the truck back from the insurance company for a small amount say $200.00 to $1000.00 but than your title would have a insurance caim paid or totaled vehicle claim on it forever. ask the insurance company about the title before buying back vehicle. The damage you explaind could be fixed its the dollar amount that totals most vehicles.
