Auto body repair & detailing: 87 Jeep Wrangler, jeep wrangler, surface rust

Question
Hi dave,

I've got a 87 Jeep Wrangler in excellent shape. Has only 79000 miles and was garage-kept while living in NY. Now I live in Florida and plan to keep it as long as possible. The Jeep has quite of bit of surface rust because I used it in the Northeast. And what does one do for "surface rust"? It is very noticeable under the vehicle and by the bumpers. But the motor is excellent and it runs great. To completely remove all surface rust-is that usually quite expensive? Thanks.

Answer
  hi dan,
depending on how bad it is rusted it could get kind of expensive if you take it to a shop, but i can't give you any kind of price for the repair. you would have to take it to a local shop for an estimate. basicly what would have to be done is grind off all the loose rust and apply a fiberglass base filler over it and sand smooth prime and repaint. if you dont't have the tools or knowlage of body repair you might not want to do the repair your self. you might beable to find a body man that might do or help you do the repairs and painting on the side, in his spare time. this is really about all i can tell you over the computer. thanks for writing.
