Auto Parts: Power Steering Oil Seal size, correct fitment, inner diameter

Question
Hello Mike,

I have found all the power steering oil leaked out from my 1992 Mazda 626 2 liter GE series. I have located the bearing and oil seal in the power steering unit have to be replaced.

Do you know what size of oil seal I need?

The old oil seal's markings are all torn when I was trying to take out the oil seal. I know the inner diameter (from the shaft), but is the outter diameter 36mm, 36.5mm or 37mm??

Please help as I have the power steering pump all taken apart only waiting for the oil seal.

Mark.

Answer
Have you tried the dealer?  This would be your best bet.

If that isn't an option, try and at least get the factory part number from Mazda.  All of the big seal companies (CR, etc.) have cross references which your local parts house ought to be able to refer to.  There's a lot of pressure behind this seal, so you want to get the correct fitment to ensure that it won't leak.

Another thing to consider is that Mazda, being a small concern, probably doesn't make that pump themselves.  Find the manufacturer's name on the pump and contact them directly.
