Motorcycle Repair: 1978 sportster mod, gasket kit, oil tank

Mike, I have gone out and done it.  bought my first sportster! I picked up a
1978 stock sportster and have already started its road to recovery. New front
controls with all new brakes and a complete gasket kit also.

My one concern now is I want to put a better quality battery  on it (gel
Style)(also smaller) along with an oil tank the battery would fit into, this way i
can get the oil tank and the battery out of the way of my legs..
Any help in this matter?

You will have to shop around for a oil tank that is smaller and will fit your bike. If you go with a smaller battery, make sure it has about hte same cranking amps as the stock one, so the motor will turn over.
Check V-Twin Manufacturing catalog online and you will find a sportster section. They might have a oil tank you are looking for
